In bid for Oklahoma labor commissioner, widow vows focus on workplace violence, mental health

The wife of slain Labor Commissioner Mark Costello wants to carry on her husband's legacy by becoming the next labor commissioner.

Cathy Costello announced Tuesday she has asked Gov. Mary Fallin to appoint her to serve the remainder of her husband's term.

“I am ready, willing, qualified and energized to continue the work that Mark started at the Department of Labor,” she said in a video announcement posted to YouTube.

In her video, Cathy Costello pledges to improve mental health services in the workplace, if appointed. She mentions the employees and patrons of the restaurant where her husband was attacked and the tragedy they witnessed as an instance of workplace violence.

Fallin will appoint a successor to serve the remainder of Costello's term, which ends in 2018. Deputy Commissioner Stacy Bonner is acting commissioner in the interim
