The Department of Health and
Human Services (HHS) has mandated that all entities covered by the Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) must all transition to a
new set of codes for electronic health care transactions on October 1, 2014.
OrionNet Systems, the
founders of the enterprise software for behavioral health agencies, ThinkHealth
Practice Management “EHR”, is ready for the ICD-9 to ICD-10 transition.
“We are here to help people
be ready for any and all changeovers,” said Clyde Wafford, president of OrionNet
Systems.
The practice of medicine has
changed dramatically in the last 25 years or so. There have been many new conditions
discovered, many new treatments developed, and many new types of medical
devices have been placed into service. The ICD-9 code set was not designed to
capture all of this progress, and as such, has become bogged down with many
types of modifications to attempt to capture information. The ICD-10 code set
is much better at describing the current practice of medicine, and has the
flexibility to adapt as medicine changes.
One of the most important
concerns in the transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM codes is that there is no
simple mapping or translation from the former to the latter. There are some
one-to-one correspondences, but often there are one-to-many, many-to-one,
many-to-many, or no correspondence at all. This is a major implementation consideration
for the state Medicaid agencies. There are some tables and crosswalks that have
been published to ameliorate this problem (such at the general equivalence
tables published by the National
Center for Health
Statistics), but additional study will determine how coding will change.
OrionNet Systems has
researched into crosswalks and other helpful publications to help their
agencies go through the transition seamlessly.
“ICD-10 is just the latest
and we are here for our agencies,” said Clyde Wafford. “Here to help them get
the new codes, trained on using the new codes, and working with them through
this transition.”
